When Does Determinacy Imply Expectational Stability?

چکیده
We study the connections between determinacy of rational expectations equilibrium, and expectational stability or learnability of that equilibrium, in a relatively general New Keynesian model. Adoption of policies that induce both determinacy and learnability of equilibrium has been considered fundamental to successful policy in the literature. We ask what types of economic assumptions drive differences in the necessary and sufficient conditions for the two criteria. Our framework is sufficiently flexible to encompass lags in information, alternative pricing assumptions, a cost channel for monetary policy, and either Euler equation or infinite horizon approaches to learning. We are able to isolate conditions under which determinacy does and does not imply learnability, and also conditions underwhich long horizon forecasts make a clear difference to conclusions about expectational stability. The sharpest result is that informational delays break equivalence connections between determinacy and learnability.

Comparing expectational stability criteria in dynamical models : a preparatory over view
The paper compares the most significant expectational stability criteria that have been used to assess the plausibility of perfect foresight trajectories in forward-looking dynamical systems : determinacy of trajectories, absence of neighbour sunspot trajectories, convergence of "evolutive" and "eductive" learning processes. It examines, within a set of increasingly complex dynamical models, th...
متن کاملInvestment and Monetary Policy: Learning and Determinacy of Equilibrium
We explore determinacy and expectational stability (learnability) of rational expectations equilibrium (REE) in New Keynesian (NK) models that include capital. Using a consistent calibration across three different models—laboronly, firm-specific capital, or an economy-wide rental market for capital, we provide a clear picture of when REE is determinate and learnable and when it is not under a v...
متن کاملA note on expectational stability under non-zero trend inflation
This study examines the expectational stability of the rational expectations equilibria (REE) under alternative Taylor rules when trend inflation is non-zero. We find that when trend inflation is high, the REE is likely to be expectationally unstable. This result holds true regardless of the nature of the data (such as contemporaneous data, forecast, and lagged data) introduced in the Taylor ru...
متن کاملDoes it matter (for equilibrium determinacy) what price index the central bank targets?
What inflation rate should the central bank target? We address determinacy issues related to this question in a two-sector model in which prices can differ in equilibrium. We assume that the degree of nominal price stickiness can vary across the sectors and that labor is immobile. The contribution of this paper is to demonstrate that a modified Taylor Principle holds in this environment. If the...
متن کاملBad News for News Shocks? The Expectational-Stability and Comovement Tradeoff in a News-Driven Business Cycle Model
This paper investigates whether adaptive learning and news shocks, operating in tandem, can generate business cycle dynamics that match the data. In doing so, this paper adopts expectational stability (“E-stability”) as a natural criterion for rationality: plausible equilibria should arise from an adaptive learning formulation where agents form forecasts from a correctly specified model whose p...
